Wisconsin judge to hear voter ID suit

Wisconsin judge to hear voter ID suit

A Dane County, Wisconsin judge has agreed to hear a case involving the state’s voter ID law. The case was brought forth by Network partner League of Women Voters of Wisconsin. The judge also agreed to hear an argument from the state Department of Justice contending that the League does not have legal standing on the issue. The hearing date for both cases is March 9.

“Our lawsuit argues that this law creates a third category of otherwise eligible citizens who are barred from voting, and that is people who don’t have ID,” LWV of Wisconsin executive director Andrea Kaminski said to Milwaukee Public Radio. Other organizations have also filed against the voter ID law in state and federal court, according to WUVM in Milwaukee.

The voter ID law is set to go into effect in Wisconsin on February 21.
