Ohio legislators off to slow start

Ohio legislators have enacted only nine bills so far this year according to Ohio Citizen Action’s “Money in Politics Project” report, or less than half of the number enacted in the same time frame last year.

The News-Herald’s editorial “Are state legislators on idle?” questions what Ohio legislators have been doing over the past legislative session, stating that for the nine bills Ohio has enacted, Michigan has enacted 98, Illinois enacted 781 and California enacted 872.

And all nine bills enacted come from 306 introduced to the Ohio House and 183 to the Senate. Six of the bills passed were budget related and one approved certain compensation for war veterans.

One reason legislators may find it hard enacting bills is because they have a hard time actually attending their scheduled meetings. Of the 92 scheduled legislative sessions through Oct. 10, approximately 40 have been canceled.

They may have had a hard time fitting the sessions into their busy fundraising schedule though, where they held 243 fundraising events.
