Obama administration receives high marks on report card

The League of Women Voters, Common Cause, Democracy 21 and the U.S. PIRG issued a report card for the Executive Branch lobbying, ethics and transparency reforms by the Obama administration.

Overall, the Obama administration received high marks during its first year. It received an “A” in open government, reverse revolving door restrictions and the revolving door lobbying ban. In banning lobbyist gifts, preventing lobbyists from serving on advisory boards and restrictions on seeking stimulus funds the administration received a “B.” No grade was issued for its restrictions on seeking financial bailouts.

The report card concluded the administration has adopted the strongest and most comprehensive lobbying, ethics and transparency rules and policies of any administration to govern its own activities.

But while the groups praise the Obama administration for its transparency, it points out the lack of reform in campaign finances. Lobbyists, special interest groups and campaign contributions continue to influence government decisions at a high cost to Americans. The test for the administration in 2010, according to the groups, will be Obama’s agenda to eliminate the financial influence on Washington.
