Obama administration floats executive order for donation transparency

The Obama administration is passing around a draft executive order that would require companies with government contracts and their executives to disclose their political donations.

In the wake of the DISCLOSE act’s failure to pass a Senate filibuster in the last Congress, this is a move that can, in some ways, counteract the Citizens United Supreme Court decision that permitted corporate campaign contributions. Huffington Post reports that the executive order would cover contributions made by “directors, officers, affiliates or subsidiaries” to “federal candidates, political party committees, and ‘third party entities’ involved in electioneering.” SCOTUSblog takes a closer look at the relationship between this executive order and the Citizens United decision. Politico takes a closer look at the text, and provides a PDF of the draft.
