Network partners in Minnesota make recommendations to state redistricting board

Network partners in Draw the Line Minnesota have completed their scheduled hearings by the Citizens Redistricting Commission, and have released a summary report of their findings, along with sample maps. The report also covers four key principles that the Commission recommends for the state’s judicial panel (in priority order) – 1. Preserve communities of interest; 2. Ensure fair and non-diluting minority representation; 3. Do not intentionally protect or defeat incumbents; 4. Create compact districts. The Commission recommends that any proposed map be evaluated against these four principles to ensure that the goals and needs of Minnesotans are met in the final map.

Read and download the report, and view the Commission’s draft maps at the Draw the Line Minnesota website.

Network partner Common Cause Minnesota has released a letter to the state’s special redistricting panel asking them to strongly consider communities of interest when drawing their maps. The group also proposes a new definition of what a community of interest should be, based on public hearings and discussions with community members.
