Network partner finds problems in recall elections related to voter ID law

New Wisconsin voter ID requirements led to longer lines and increased confusion during August recall elections, says Network partner League of Women Voters Wisconsin in a new report. League volunteers who monitored polling sites across the state during recall elections found that officials were inconsistent in asking for ID, and that in some locations, due in part to ID requirements, people waited over an hour before being able to cast their ballots.

“It is clear that many municipal clerks will need to hire more poll workers for future elections because of the new requirements,” said Andrea Kaminski, executive director of League of Women Voters Wisconsin. “This is an unfortunate and unneeded expense for local governments at a time when municipal services are being cut to save tax dollars.”

The League made recommendations in their report, including extended training for poll workers on what IDs they can accept, and hiring more clerks to better service high turnout.
