Illinois Fair Map Amendment falls short

Efforts to place the Illinois Fair Map Amendment on the November ballot fell short, as the coalition announced last week they did not gather enough signatures for the petition.
Citing a lack of time as the cause of the failure, the group thanked those who helped tirelessly circulate the petition.
“Given the number of signatures, we got with almost no money in 4 1/2 months, I’m confident we could get the signatures in 18 months,” Jan Czarnik, executive director of the Illinois League of Women Voters of Illinois, told the Springfield Journal-Register.
In a press release, Mary Schaafsma of the LWVIL and Czarnik vowed to continue monitoring the redistricting process in the state and to pursue a constitutional amendment to reform redistricting.
Another petition drive cannot be started until after the November election, but Cznarik said the group is already planning to meet with groups to create better strategies.
