Chicago Tribune calls for merit selection in Illinois

The Chicago Tribune editorial board called for the implementation of a merit system in Illinois after expensive court races in the state, and a refusal by a justice to recuse himself in a case involving a campaign donor. In lieu of taking the money out of politics entirely, the board says, “we can try to take the judiciary out of politics.”
