Advocacy groups urge transparency in “fiscal cliff” negotiations

A group of advocacy organizations have urged transparency in the upcoming “fiscal cliff” negotiations. The Sunlight Foundation, Institute for Policy Innovation, OpenTheGovernment.org, Public Citizen, and US PIRG sent a letter to President Obama and Congressional leaders calling on the leaders to make commitments to posting legislation online, and disclosing meetings with lobbyists in real time.

The letter reads, in part:

Transparency around the coming negotiations represents our best chance to elevate substance and reduce undue influence. At the same time, it will foster accountability and greater public acceptance of the difficult policy decisions that will result from these negotiations, while returning to a healthy process where such decisions are made through regular, representative channels, in full public view
